âśż General Information
- Type: Decorative dahlia
- Bloom Size: Medium (approximately 4–6 inches)
- Plant Height: 3–4 feet
- Bloom Season: Mid to late summer through early fall
- Growth Habit: Strong, upright stems with excellent cut-flower performance
âśż Colour & Appearance
Venus dahlias feature a soft blush pink base with creamy white to pale ivory centers, often with a subtle gradient that gives the bloom depth and dimension. The petals are slightly curved and layered in a symmetrical, rounded form—creating that classic “romantic garden” look.
Timing (Zone 5B – BC Interior):
- Plant outdoors after last frost (typically mid–May in your region)
- Soil should be consistently above ~10°C (50°F)
- You can pre-sprout tubers indoors in April for a head start
Light:
- Full sun (minimum 6–8 hours daily)
Soil:
- Rich, well-draining soil
- Amend with compost + organic matter (your compost + alfalfa/bone meal combo works beautifully)
Spacing:
- 12–18 inches apart for good airflow
Planting Depth:
- Place tubers 4–6 inches deep, laying horizontally
- Ensure the “eye” is facing up
Watering:
- Do not water heavily until sprouts appear
- Then water deeply 2–3 times per week depending on heat
Support:
- Install stakes or netting at planting time
- Essential for cut-flower production to keep stems straight
Pinching:
- Pinch plants at 8–12 inches tall
- Encourages longer stems + more blooms (key for design work)
Harvesting (Cut Flowers):
- Cut when blooms are fully open (dahlias don’t open much after cutting)
- Regular harvesting encourages more production
